Genesis 10 and 11

Respecting God and Others

PART 1: Noah’s Vineyard & Honoring Others

Quick Summary

After the flood, Noah planted a vineyard and made wine. But one day, he drank too much and fell asleep in his tent, uncovered. His son Ham saw his father and told his brothers, Shem and Japheth, in a mocking way. Instead of joining in, Shem and Japheth walked backward and covered their father respectfully. When Noah woke up, he blessed Shem and Japheth but cursed Ham’s son, Canaan.

Mini Story: “The Sleepover Incident”

At Mia’s birthday sleepover, one of the girls, Leila, accidentally fell asleep with toothpaste on her face from a prank. In the morning, everyone laughed at her, but Mia’s friend Chloe quietly helped Leila wash up before she saw her reflection.

Think About It:

  • Who acted like Ham? Who acted like Shem and Japheth?

  • How do you respond when someone else is embarrassed?

Memory Verse:

  • “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

— Exodus 20:12 (NIV)

Reflection Questions:

  1. Why do you think God cares about how we treat others when they make mistakes?

  2. What does it mean to “cover” someone instead of exposing them?

  3. Can you think of a time when you had to choose between gossiping and helping?

Activity: Honor in Action Comic!

Draw 4 boxes:

Box 1: Noah is asleep in the tent

Box 2: Ham is pointing and laughing

Box 3: Shem and Japheth walking backward

Box 4: Noah blessing them

Add speech/thought bubbles. Bonus: Add a “lesson learned” caption at the bottom.

PART 2: The Tower of Babel – Pride vs Purpose

Quick Summary

The people after the flood decided to build a city and a giant tower to make a name for themselves. But they weren’t doing it for God. They wanted to be famous without Him. God saw their pride and confused their language, causing people to scatter across the earth.

Mini Story: “The Group Project”

At school, Ava’s class was building a model of the solar system. Everyone helped except Nathan, who only cared about getting attention. He kept saying, “I did this,” even though others did the work. Their teacher reminded them: teamwork is about shared credit, not showing off.

Think About It:

  • What was Nathan’s mistake?

  • How is this like the people building the Tower of Babel?

Reflection Questions:

1. What’s the danger in working for our own fame instead of God’s glory?

2. Have you ever tried to do something big without asking God first?

3. Why do you think pride leads to separation?

Hands-On Activity:

Marshmallow Tower Challenge!

Supplies per team:

· 20 marshmallows

· 30 toothpicks

Timer (set for 10–15 minutes)

Instructions:

1. Work in teams of 3–5.

2. Build the tallest tower you can using only marshmallows and toothpicks.

3. Your tower must stand on its own for 10 seconds.

4. Afterward, discuss:

  • What was fun or hard about building together?

  • Did your team cooperate or compete?

  • How does this remind you of the Tower of Babel?

Tie-In Lesson:

  • Just like the people in Genesis 11, you worked with others to build something. But did your motives match God’s heart? Are we building to glorify ourselves or to work in unity with God’s purpose?

Activity: Language Chaos Game

  • Form teams. Each player must speak in a made-up language while doing a task like drawing, passing objects, or building something.

  • Goal: Feel the confusion like at Babel!

Afterward Discuss:

  • What was it like trying to work together without clear communication?

  • How can language and pride divide people today?

Craft: Nations Collage

Make a world collage showing different people, cultures, and flags. Title it:

  • “One Creator. Many Nations.”

Write underneath:

  • “From one man He made all nations… and He marked out their appointed times in history.” – Acts 17:26

Review & Reflect:

  • What does Genesis 10–11 teach about pride and respect?

  • Who do you want to be more like—Ham, or Shem and Japheth?

  • What’s one way you can use your talents to serve others this week?
