Genesis 3
It’s important to know and trust the character of God so we are not fooled by lies. Adam and Eve chose not to listen to God, and their choice had serious consequences. Discover what happened after they ate the fruit—and how knowing the truth leads us back to God.
Retelling
Adam and Eve heard a voice-but it wasn't God's. God's voice always brought peace, love, and comfort. This voice sounded friendly, but it made them curious-and not in a good way.
Each day, the voice would say, 'There's more to life than this. You could be so much more!'
Adam usually ignored it. But one day, while walking in the middle of the garden, he heard the voice talking to Eve. Instead of stopping it, Adam came closer. He was curious too.
'Look at these trees,' the voice said. 'Aren't they beautiful? Did God really say you're not allowed to eat from any of them?'
Eve answered, 'We can eat from all the trees-except the one in the middle. God said we can't eat it or even touch it, or we'll die.'
The voice laughed. 'That's not true! You won't die. In fact, if you eat it, you'll be like God. You won't need Him to tell you what's right or wrong-you'll know for yourself. It's called The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil for a reason! Eat it and see.'
Eve looked at the fruit. It seemed delicious-and full of wisdom. She reached out, took a bite, and swallowed. Adam watched. Nothing happened. She was fine.
'It's okay,' Eve said, smiling. 'I'm still alive. Try it!'
Adam took the fruit and ate it too. But this time... something did happen.
Questions for You
What do you think happened after they ate the fruit?
Thumbs up = They became as wise as God
Thumbs down = They didn't
Truth is, their eyes were opened-but not how they expected. They didn't feel smart. They felt ashamed, afraid, lonely, and guilty.
What Did They Do?
Read verse 7 in your Bible.
Question: What action did they take that shows us they felt shame?
Answer: They tried to cover themselves and hide from God.
Feelings We Know
Have you ever felt like hiding? Maybe you were afraid you'd get in trouble or were embarrassed. That's how Adam and Eve felt too.
Magnet Object Lesson
Take two magnets. If you hold them the right way, they stick together. That's like Adam and Eve before they sinned-connected to God. That connection gave them joy and life.
Now flip the magnets around. What happens? They push apart. That's what happened when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Sin (disobeying God) separates us from Him.
Question: If being with God is called life, what do you think being separated from Him is called?
Answer: Death-spiritual death.
Eyes Opened, Hearts Turned
Adam and Eve's eyes were opened, but now they focused only on themselves. They wanted to decide right and wrong on their own-without God. That's called pride and selfishness.
Can you name some selfish things people do?
Examples: Lying, stealing, hurting others, bullying, saying mean things, starting fights or wars.
The Good News
Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed, God still loved them. He had a plan to bring people back to Him. It’s called redemption-a way for our connection with God to be restored.
