Exodus 12

Exodus 12

This lesson highlights the importance of the Passover lamb and how it led to the redemption of the Israelites.

The Passover Lamb

Scripture: Exodus 12

What Happened in This Chapter?

In Genesis 12, God told the people of Israel to sacrifice a lamb and paint its blood on their doorposts. This act protected their families: If a home had the lamb’s blood on the door, the firstborn child would be saved. That lamb redeemed them.

What Does Redeem Mean?

Redeem: To rescue someone from being punished or suffering. So the lamb took the place of the firstborn. It was sacrificed so the child didn’t have to die.

But There’s More…

This lamb was a foreshadowing — a hint of someone greater who would come later. That someone is Jesus.

Some Quick Facts About Jesus:

  • Jesus was never created. He always existed.

  • Before He was born as a baby, He was called “God the Word.”

  • He came to redeem us — not just from death on earth, but from eternal punishment.

We’ll learn more about who Jesus is as we read through Scripture. But this Passover story gives us an early glimpse of Him.

Comparison: The Lamb and Jesus

Passover Lamb

  • Saved the firstborn of Israel

  • Blood had to be on the door

  • Could only save Israelites who obeyed

  • Redeemed from physical death

Jesus

  • Saves all who believe in Him

  • His Spirit must be in our hearts

  • Can only save those who repent and turn to God

  • Redeems from eternal death

ACTIVITY: Blood on the Door — Jesus in the Heart

Supplies:

  • Red construction paper

  • White paper (door shape)

  • Scissors & glue

  • Markers or crayons

Instructions:

1. Cut out a small door (rectangle) from the white paper.

2. Cut out a border from the red paper (like the blood around the door).

3. Glue the red border onto the white door, just like the Israelites did.

4. Write this inside the door: “God’s Spirit is in my heart because I believe in Jesus.”

5. Around the outside, write what you’ve learned about Jesus so far.

Discussion Question:

1. Why do you think the lamb’s blood had to be visible?

2. How is our faith in Jesus like that?

3. What happens when we “paint” our hearts with trust in Jesus?
