Exodus 13

Exodus 13:17–18
This lesson teaches that God knows what’s best for us, even when it’s hard to see. God led the Israelites the long way through the desert because He knew it was the best path for them.
The Long Way
When the Israelites were finally free from Egypt, God didn’t take them the shortest way. He knew they weren’t ready to fight the people on that road. They had just come out of slavery and needed time to grow stronger. So God led them through the desert instead, the long way—but the best way for them. Even though it may not have made sense to them, God had a plan. He was protecting them because He knew what they could and couldn’t handle.
Activity Sheet: Trusting God’s Path
MEMORY VERSE:
“My grace is enough for you. When you are weak, then my power is made perfect in you.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 ICB)
BIBLE CONNECTIONS
Main Point: God leads us in ways that protect us, even if it’s not the way we expected.
LET’S THINK:
1. Why didn’t God take the Israelites the short way?
2. How do you think the Israelites felt about going the long way?
3. Can you think of a time when something didn’t go the way you wanted, but later you realized it was for the best?
CREATIVE CHALLENGE:
Draw a simple map showing two paths:
A short, dangerous path (with fighting, fear, and confusion),
A long, safe path (with time to rest, grow, and follow God).
Label the paths: “My Way” and “God’s Way”
Then answer: Which path would you choose if you knew God was with you? Why?
PRAYER PROMPT:
“Lord, help me trust You even when life doesn’t go the way I hoped. Remind me that You know what’s best for me. Thank You for loving me and guiding me every day.”
BONUS VERSE:
“When you ask, you do not receive because the reason you ask is wrong.” (James 4:3 ICB)
Think About It:
God wants to give you good things—but sometimes He says no because He loves you too much to give you something that could hurt you.
